Cubase VST supports not just plug-ins for audio effects, it allows the same open technology to be used to bridge the gap between the audio and MIDI worlds. Commonly called virtual synthesizers but actually being capable of much more, these plug-ins receive MIDI events from either live MIDI input, or from the playback of MIDI tracks, and generate audio which appears direct in the VST mixer. We call them Virtual Instruments.

The advantages of this complete integration within Cubase VST are threefold: The MIDI is converted to audio with sample accuracy, many times more precise than any external MIDI device can be, and the complete setup including patches and programs are saved with the Cubase song for instant recall later. The changes made to any virtual instrument parameter can be automated to capture the dynamic changes to the sound as part of the complete performance.
