The Dr005 is the best drum sampler money can buy at this point in time, not only is it fast and efficient it is really responsive. Also it should be noted that even Steinberg's LM4 instrument doesn't have note velocity like the DR005 does. Once again I find myself asking questions like 'How is it 1 guy coding at home can out perform the efforts of steinberg's team of designers and produce better results cheaper?' Ok so there aren't so many wages to pay for but the fact the program kicks LM's ass is just unbelievable.

Loading Sounds into the DR005
It may look confusing at first but the layout is actually really simple. You assign sounds to Midi notes by clicking on the blocks at the top, This will open the load file dialog box where you can select wave files (unfortunately at this time it does not have the ability to audition files before loading them).
When you have selected a file it is placed in the slot you clicked on, The midi note it is played on will be the number pointed to by the small arrow next to the file name, Now this brings me onto one of my favorite features of the DR005. You can change the midi note each of the 16 slots is assigned too. You can even assign them all to the same midi note effectively making Velocity splits.
Sending Midi to the DR005 In Cubase VST
Load up the DR005 instrument into the instruments bank then go down to a midi channel in the arrange page and select the output to be the DR005 rather than your midi output. Now when you play midi notes on that channel they will be assigned to the instrument. If for instance you have selected the first sound to be a Bass Drum in the DR005 and its midi note is set to 60 (C3) then playing this note will trigger the sample.
Playing with the sample
You can adjust the settings of the sample (Pitch, Release Decay and Output) to suit your needs, Its really handy to be able to adjust the release like this as I often add reverb to the end of snares for ambience. The DR005 lets you do this in real time and gives you effective control over flow of sounds against each other.
Assigning to Outputs
There are 4 available outputs you can group channels to, with 16 midi note slots available over all. Each output slot effectively gets its own rewired channel on the sequencers mixing desk.
Adding FX to the samples
Once you have selected your sounds and assigned them to an output, they will appear as a rewired channel on your sequencers mixing desk. This is great, In VST & Logic Audio you will then be able to assign real time FX (plugins) to each channel and get full control over the channels EQ etc just as you would with any audio track in the sequencer
The overall output of the sampler can be rendered to disk using the normal export audio processes in your sequencer.
Exporting your Patches
This is incredibly easy, once you have made the patch you can export it using the export patch button at the top of the sampler, The amazing thing to note about this is it will export a single file. All the information and relevant wave data is contained inside the file. No messing about with stupid scripts and assigning directories etc. It is 100% user friendly.
Importing Patches
Because of the way the DR005 exports patches it is Easy to import previously made or downloaded patches. Just select the file and load it, it really is that simple.
Summary
This product is way ahead of the LM4 it has better features and timing, the patches are easier to export/import and its cheaper. Well done Fxpansion.
