1.0 Welcome
The Sonic Foundry MPEG plug-in is designed to work with the full version of VideoFactory. It allows you to import MPEG video files into your project for editing and lets you render MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files.
2.0 Installation
After you have downloaded the MPEG plug-in from the Sonic Foundry Web site, double-click the self-extracting executable and follow the instructions to install the plug-in. After the plug-in is installed, you will be able to insert events containing MPEG video onto the timeline, and MPEG (*.mpg) will show up as an available file format in the Render As dialog.
3.0 What is MPEG?
MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) video is a standard compression format for encoding digital video. MPEG videos are highly compressed and yet maintain much of the quality of the original source video. MPEG is widely used throughout the video industry including VCDs, DVDs, and satellite digital television.
MPEG video is a highly compressed but lossy format that is an excellent choice for creating video for distribution. Because of its lossy nature, however, MPEG video is not recommended as an editing format. An ideal editing situation is to capture and edit DV video and render your final movie to the MPEG-2 format.
4.0 Creating MPEG Video
Creating MPEG video is as simple as creating any other type of video.
1. Open a VideoFactory project.
2. From the File menu, choose Render As.
3. In the Render As dialog, enter a name for the file.
4. From the Save as type list, choose MPEG (*.mpg).
5. Choose a template from the Template list or click the Custom button to adjust the various MPEG settings.
6. Click the Save button.
MPEG renders can sometimes take more time than renders with some other formats.
5.0 Compatibility
MPEG video files can be played back on most computer systems. MPEG video files can also be burned to CDs or DVDs for playback in standalone VCD, SCVD, and DVD players. Sonic Foundry cannot guarantee the compatibility of MPEG files with VCD/DVD authoring software or VCD, SCVD, and DVD standalone players. Please consult your specific authoring software's documentation for information on what constitutes a valid file and then customize the MPEG rendering properties in VideoFactory to match.
