Chords and Progressions for Rock Guitar is a useful student introduction to the chord structure of rock and roll. (As one moves through this volume, one is struck by just how simple that structure is.) The book is eighty eight pages long and is written in both standard and tab notation. Surprisingly, there are no chord charts. A CD is included. Experienced players will be wasting their time and money on this.
Author Ralph Agresta's technique is to illustrate essential rock chord progressions by reference to popular songs that employ those progressions. After beginning with some lip service to major and minor chord structure, Agresta moves to meatier matters by showing us the I, IIm progression, here the Emaj to F#min progression in the Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down", and how substituting the F#m7 will lead us into the Young Rascals' great tune "Groovin'", then moves on page by page to different progressions.
The book then is just a long series of first position (primarily) major and minor progressions with a song or two showing how to use them. People looking to learn how to vamp will get little of use of this. Here’s the table contents so you can an idea of what your $17.95 buys you:

Chord Progressions Featuring (sus, 6ths, Add9, aug and dim7th).
Each page has two or three songs featured, each with two or three bars of music.
I personally don’t use the book very much as I don’t do any songwriting. Given that most of the songs use lots of open chords, its also not very useful for developing technique. Someone who plays in a cover band is probably best off just buying the sheet music.
I think the book, though, can be useful as an adjunct for students who are interested in rock music and learning the various open chords. Most introductory methods use songs that are out of copyright to keep the costs down and therefore use music that is rather boring to modern students. (Some of the stuff in Mel Bay’s series is just unplayable.) A sharp teacher can show a student how chords are used in a more contemporary fashion—that is, if a student who has been weaned on Disturbed and Pantera can find songs played by Buddy Holly and the Young Rascals somehow relevant! (There's more recent stuff, though, by bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Green Day, etc.)
