de la Mancha has announced the release of
dirtbox 3 - an update to the compression/distortion/modulation VST plug-in for Windows. No longer freeware, dirtbox now costs $15.
http://www.delamancha.co.uk/dirtbox.htm
dirtbox is an effect plug-in designed to compress, distort and modulate your audio into a whole new filthy world, from subtle warmth to dynamic destruction. It’s arsenal of dirty bombs cover parallel compression, many flavours of dirt and filth, bit crushing, sample rate dropping and ring modulation. Add to that a 4 way XY pad and 2 tempo-sync LFOs and you can modulate up to 6 parameters to really throw that filth around the place. Time to get dirrrrrrrrrrty…
features
- Fully featured compressor, with parallel dry audio for a huge sound
- 3 banks of dirt, each offering 18 flavours of filth with adjustable levels and wet/dry control
- 1 to 16 bits and 1.0 to 44.1kHz sample rate let you get as crushed and crappy as you want
- Ring modulation offers 12 tonal variations and 11 different waveforms, with adjustable frequency
- 4 way XY pad allows assignment of any 4 of 10 parameters to each corner, with;
- 0-100% modulation across opposite corners of the pad
- bar graph shows modulation amount in each corner
- Increase minimum % level for tighter range
- 2 tempo-sync LFOs to modulate puck in the X and Y axis
- 2 tempo-sync LFOs each have;
- 14 waveforms including two types of random
- tempo-sync settings from 1/16 to 16 beats, including multiples of 2 and 3
- depth (0-100%) and phase (-360 to +360 degrees)
- bar graph showing real-time modulation
- Each LFO can also modulate an additional parameter from a choice of 10, with LFO1 also able to modulate LFO2
- All modulated parameters have visual indicators of real-time modulation
- Midi CC and Midi Learn options
- over 50 presets covering subtle to painful
demo VST and audio
Download demo VST (1.7 MB) - This zip contains the demo version of dirtbox 3 to allow you to fully evaluate it before purchasing. It is fully functioning except you will get 1 second of silence every 10 seconds and a nag screen on start up. Manual is also included
You can also download audio demos to get a feel of what dirtbox can do. No other effects are used in these demos, first few bars are the dry audio, followed by several dirtbox presets
Download dirtbox audio demo 1 mp3 - drums run through various presets
Download dirtbox audio demo 2 mp3 - some vocals get the dirtbox treatment
Download dirtbox audio demo 3 mp3 - everyone loves electric piano right?
Download dirtbox audio demo 4 mp3 - clean guitar sound gets roughed up
Download dirtbox audio demo 5 mp3 - heavier guitar sound, mashed even further
Loudness warning!
Due to the nature of both compression and distortion, dirtbox has the potential to get very loud and very nasty if you really crank all the right knobs. If you are scanning through the presets or randomising parameters, please be careful to do this at reasonable volumes and with a limiter plug-in after dirtbox, especially if using headphones. Some presets can be relatively quiet and others much louder, and whilst scanning through it is easy to come across one that is going to make you lose control of your own dirtbox
Preset tweaking
There is a wide range of presets included to demonstrate the different possibilities of dirtbox, whether simple compression, pleasing distortion or crazy, modulated glitch-foolery. These presets can sound totally different depending on the source material and where one sounds good on drums, it may sound less good on bass. A preset that sounds great on guitar may not sound pleasant on vocals. The compressor settings are also quite arbitary and will almost always need to be adjusted to the volume and dynamic range of the audio you are running through it. So the presets are a demonstration and a starting point, but you should expect to experiment a little if you want to get the best out of dirtbox.
Note for users with Multicore processors
dirtbox was developed using SynthEdit software version 1.016
There is a known bug with this version of SynthEdit that affects some multicore processors, although it isn't widely documented. Some users with multicore processors and certain hosts have reported issues when trying to load multiple instances of the same SynthEdit plugin. This bug is not reproducable on all systems or hosts, and may not occur on your system. If you have a multicore processor you are strongly urged to fully test the demo version of unstable on your system before purchasing.
This bug does NOT affect single core processors or single instances of a plugin
This bug only seems to apply in hosts with multi-core support
It is intended that SynthEdit 1.1 will fix this bug, but there is no planned release date. There is no guarantee that dirtbox can be updated on release of SE 1.1, as the compatibility between the two versions is not certain.
If you do have issues with multiple instances, there is a potential workaround. By making several copies of dirtbox.dll (eg dirtbox_1.dll, dirtbox_2.dll, etc) in your VST directory, your host will see each one as a different plugin and be able load one instance of each
Note for users of FL Studio 8.0
There is a known compatibility issue of dirtbox with FL8. The plugin will load, but will not generate audio and will crash FL on deletion/replacement. This issue is only for FL8, there is no issue for FL7 or any other host. This is due to a bug in the FL VST wrapper, confirmed by Imageline (the makers of FL Studio).
Imageline have now released an update to FL8 which fixes the bug and allows dirtbox to work correctly
Click here to go to the
Imageline forum thread where you can download the FL8 update
The update is 1.7MB and you unzip the contents into your FL8 directory. You need to be logged in to the forum to be able to download the update
