Hello,
> Are the VIA-based boards a safe choice?
There is no technical problem that would prevent to work with a VIA chipset based mainboard. On Musikmesse last week we had a ASUS A7V based system to play the new Tassman 2.0 modular synthesizer (from Applied Acoustics Systems) on a SoundTrack Digital XG (with 2ms of latency @ 44.1kHz) standalone and with a SoundTrack Audio DSP24 Value (with 5ms of latency @ 44.1kHz) inside Cubase VST 5.0. This also means that it works fine with the normal DSP24 card. In fact, we have a long row of customers that use this combination.
Mainboards make trouble (usually) if the BIOS does not follow all the most recent needs and specifications. This is nothing special at all and not serious as there are regular BIOS updates anyway. Please keep in mind that many cheaper mainboards (most of them are in fact using VIA chipsets but that is no rule) suffer from less frequent BIOS updates and are causing more problems. Specificially, currently we cannot recommend to use the VIA based mainboards from MSI and the mainboards from DFI. Also the latest VIA based mainboard from ABIT is not really a good choice right at the moment. This does not mean that the hardware is bad, in fact, most of these boards will get BIOS updates that are fixing the problems pretty soon.
Best regards,
Claus
