I have patched this signal into TWO Weiss DS1-Mk2 units in series. The first is set to 2:1 compression with a threshold of -10 dBFS, the second is set to 1:2 expansion with the same threshold and identical attack, release and other parameters. Time flows from left to right on the graph. At the head (left side) of the graph we see the original signal (both Weiss units are bypassed). It goes from -15 to -5 level. Then, in the middle of the next -15 signal, I switch in the compressor. You can see the effect of the (downward) compressor on the -5 source signal in the next high level. Then, in the middle of the next -15 signal, I switch out the compressor and switch in the expander, and you see the expanded (upwardly expanded) signal. Finally, I switch in both units, and you can see that the static level of the original signal has been "restored". There is method to this madness. The rest of the work is how you use your ears AND your brain to apply this principle to musical
首先是设置压缩比率为2:1,压缩阀值斯-10dBFS(这个其实一个VU表的度量单位,VU表上0VU=-18dBFS或者-22dBFS,数值不同是标准不同而已,没所谓的,反正你就把-10dBFS当成-10dB去理解吧),第二步是设置扩展的比率1:2,然后设置与压缩相同的扩展阀值,以及相同的ATTACK/RELAESE和其他参数。
