Creating music: Control-clicking or right-clicking an object gives more context-sensitive options (e.g. paste, change voice, hide) • grace notes can now be stepped through with the arrow keys and edited just like normal notes • add lines (e.g. slurs, hairpins) to a selected passage on a single staff • stems on single line staves or the middle line of normal staves can be set to point upwards by default, for percussion and vocal music • lyric positioning accounts for hanging punctuation • easier to enter lyrics into voices 1 and 2 independently • lyrics automatically attach to notes in the correct voice • new text style for lyrics above the staff • drum set (kit) staff now revised in line with the recommendations of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) • drum set staves no longer need to be assigned a special MIDI channel • control the speed of Flexi-time input with the tempo slider • metronome click now correct for pick-up (upbeat) bars • recognition of staccato, tenuto and tied notes in Flexi-time improved • more than 300 instruments now included; new instruments include didgeridoo and melodeon • more than 130 types of manuscript paper now included; new types include marching/concert/wind/military/school bands, jazz combos, drum and percussion corps, handbells, special page sizes, scores with separate title pages, etc. • manuscript papers contain house style settings appropriate for the style of music, e.g. winged repeats and Inkpen2 font for jazz scores, and dynamics above the staff for vocal scores • now more than 200 keyboard shortcuts, with many new ones, including for moving accidentals, ends of ties, transposing, changing staff spacing, etc. • now up to 10,000 levels of undo
Color & graphics: fonts are now embedded in EPS files • choose the resolution of exported EMF/BMP files • imported graphics are automatically compressed to keep file sizes down • imported graphics included in scores published on the Internet
Notation: rhythm dots can now be moved individually • new options for the appearance of ties, which can also be flipped with the X key • articulations are moveable and can be flipped between notehead and stem end of a note with the X key • new options for the appearance of two-note tremolos • new option for minimum stem length • can choose default barline style for a score, even invisible barlines • winged repeat barlines automatically drawn for jazz music • new barlines for early music (mensurstriche, tick, short, etc.) • have barlines in some instruments and not others; easier to notate multiple simultaneous time signatures • place normal barlines in the middle of a bar; ideal for making tuplets go across barlines • bar numbers are individually moveable, horizontally and vertically • new option for barlines below the bottom staff (e.g. for film scores) • hide individual tails and beams; useful for feathered beams and chords split between piano staves • chord symbols can include ‘stackable’ alterations, or no superscript characters at all • new text style for Nashville chord numbers • pressing space when inputting chord symbols advances to the next beat or note, whichever is the sooner; useful for held notes with several chord changes • more preset guitar frame chord types • create key signatures for individual staves, allowing multiple simultaneous key signatures • redesigned dialog shows each key signature graphically • many new lines, such as guitar tab bends, wide vibrato, hairpins to/from silence, dotted/dashed hairpins, new brackets, bracketed editorial slurs and hairpins
Files: file size still only 15K plus 1K-2K per page, even for large scores • Sibelius 2 can open scores saved from all previous versions of Sibelius, but due to file format changes, earlier versions of Sibelius cannot open files saved from Sibelius 2 • set the default location for saving scores from within Sibelius • scores open at the position and zoom factor you were at when you last saved • recently opened scores appear directly on the File menu • MIDI files saved from Sibelius now include full playback of repeats • MIDI file importing: recognition of rhythm, tied notes, staccatos, tuplets, spelling of accidentals all improved; staff size automatically reduced if too many instruments in the MIDI file to fit on the page; MIDI messages can be automatically hidden when imported (useful if there are many of them)
Fonts: new Inkpen2 handwriting font, now with a script text font, with many more cursive music symbols and improved versions of the Inkpen music symbols • new Inkpen2 manuscript papers and house styles you can import into existing scores to update their look • new symbols in the Opus font, and new Opus PlainChords font for chords with no superscript characters
Layout and formatting: new option allows you to ignore the width of lyrics when respacing notes • independent controls to reset the design of an object (e.g. formatting of text, curvature of a slur or tie, stem length, scale factor and aspect ratio of imported graphic) independently from its position • staff spacing in extracted parts no longer uneven
Playback: dynamics, hairpins, trills etc. can apply to a single voice, all voices, or any combination of voices • omit repeats during playback if desired • select non-adjacent staves with X-click or Ctrl+click; useful for playing back particular combinations of staves

Selections and passages: slurs/text etc. no longer displaced when copied using z-click or Alt+click • can now drag multiple selections with the mouse – previously, clicking on these after selecting would start a new selection; this now lets you select e.g. several dynamics and drag them all together, drag a chord up and down to change its pitch, etc.
Text: edit text simply by double-clicking it • easier access to special text styles (e.g. time signatures, bar numbers, etc.) for special notations such as special bar number formats • problems with text over several lines fixed
