If you're talking about 72 analog ins, the easiest ways that come to mind are 3 RME 9652 cards (plus preamps), or Motu 424 + 3 2408 boxes.

Using the MOTU's, I had a 96 in / 50 out system up and running (only 72 accessible to SAC of course) running off a 424x card. Worked really nice ... amazing the throughput of that card.

Two RME RayDAT boards give you 64 channels. Then you can buy these little 4-channel AIN and AOUT boards to give you a total of 72. Don't know if the 4 in/out are worth the price ($300 for each board, total of $600 for 4 in and out). Then again, it's cheaper than adding another RayDAT just to get 8 in/out.
The little AIN/AOUT boards, btw, are line-level only. But perfect for added a CD player, iPod, etc.
Me, I'm sure maxing out at 64 channels is good enough. Probably even 56.
