You can't really mix with a headphone. The close distance between the headphone transducers and the ears affects the perceived spectrum of the audio signal. Headphones tend to be brighter than loudspeakers with less bass, because attenuation of high frequencies occurs in air when sound waves travel from speakers to the ears. Also, headphone tranducers are so close to the eardrums which virtually bypass the acoustic shaping that occurs when 2 different sound waves interact with each other. The almost complete absent of interchannel crosstalk renders the sound from a headphone artificial.
Loudspeakers are played in a real 3-dimentional space, allowing interchannel crosstalk to take place, with reflections from the located environment and the skull of the audience before sound waves actually reach the ears. This results in a soundfield that is based on a complex of phase-shifted amplitudes, which may modify selected frequencies in amplifying, attenuating or delaying. Thus, it is impossible for a normal headphone to reproduce the effect of phase and amplitude variations due to the interaction between two audio channel when played back over loudspeakers. Headphones are not capable of re-creating these spatial artifacts in a stereo recording. Consequently, an otherwise smooth headphone mix can have a decidedly rough quality when heard through loudspeakers.
