New ASIO Driver Cuts Latency
Third party software bypasses Windows kernel 14-Apr-03
It's called the ASIO2KS project and aims to provide a lowcost solution to use off-the-shelf audio-devices like PCI-, on-board and USB- soundcards together with music-applications from manu- facturers like Steinberg or Native Instruments.
This easy-to-install driver layers itself above the original driver of the sound-card-manufacturer and circumvents the Microsoft kernel-mixer. This allows for low-latency even with low-cost soundcards (actual latency achieved depends on the performance of the host-pc, the complexity of the soft-synth(s) in use and on the quality of the underlying soundcard-driver).
